Answer of the day

Highlight the role of media in democracy.? Is it serving its purpose in 21st century?(12.5 marks)

Media is the form of Institute which provide information to citizen through various means lIke TV, Radio, Internet etc.
And democracy is a form of government where government is rule by people either directly or indirectly. In todays world most of the present democracy are indirectly elected.
For this, people required better information on the issues involved, about the representative and other kinds for the proper working of democracy. Here role of media comes into play. As already stated, media provide information to the people in the following ways
1.Making them aware of the issues government faces like corruption, taxation etc
2.Organise the people over common issue-by highlighting the issues faced by people recent health issue in Gorakhpur, unemployment etc
3.Informing people about various representative so that we can elect them wisely
4.educating masses over new development in various field like new technology
5.informing people about international succeses and examples for eg-recent eradication of malaria in Srilanka etc

Is it serving its purpose in 21st century?
Yes
1.Informing people about various issue lIke black money
2.easily accessible info to people which would be otherwise difficult for common people to undersstand for eg-about Bitcoin
3.through different platforms like social media, radio, tv etc so that people with different interest can access it accordingly
Issue with present media
1.Biased information--information provided are not holistically but with biased point of view.
2.Forcefull Opinion making rather than just providing info for eg-some unnecessary issues like small communal incident are highlighted but other issues like farmers suicide on daily basis are not thoroughly covered.
3.Media houses works on principle of maximizing TRP rather than being ethical in its working

Media as rightly said is the 4th pillar of the democracy. It has to be ethical in its working, ownership of the media houses need to be regulated so that democracy can strife for the welfare of the people.
