12ths with medical---Undergraduate in MBBS/BDS---Postgraduate MD/MS/MDS



Need
1.7 lakh doctor by 2022
2.current doctor population ratio is 1:1681 against WHO norms of 1:1000

Present Status
1.around 439 medical colleges in india-412 govt and 427 private
2.around 59000 mbbs seats and 26000 pg seats


HistoriCal Background
1.Nalanda and Taxila University provides medical education


Issue
1.Doctor population ratio is too less
2.Rote learning is more important than clinical skills.
3.backdated syllabus and teaching style
4.lack of skilled teacher
5.disparity in infrastructure across different states-most are in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra
6.lack in social accountability--rather motivated by materialistic need
7.problem with private medical college like management fee, ghost colleges.
8.corruption in medical education
9.many doctors refuse to work in villages where most need of doctors is required
10.faulty and disorganized admission process in private colleges

Way Forward
1.Medical research and clinical skill need to be encouraged
2.reforming in medical regulator and oversight institutions
3.proper medical teacher training
4.syllabus need to be updated according to the need of the time
5.proper regulation and periodic checking of private colleges.
