Qustn
NITI AYOG has published draft national energy policy. What are the major provision of the policy? What are the challenges in its Implementation? (12.5)

Sol-

NITI AYOG has published draft National energy policy replacing Integrated energy policy of 2006.

Major Provision of National Enrgy policy are

1.thermal power - - - - - increase from present 125 gw to 441 gw by 2040.
-coal will fuel 67% of indian power generation in 2022.
2. Opening of entire power value chain to private investment to create efficient energy market
3.identify and address specific issue of air quality and human resource due to inefficient utilisation of resource. It recommended efficiency improvement for various sector like ppwer, transport and househild
4.policy assumes 100% electrification in near terms

Challenges in implementation of policy
1.uncertainity wrt renewable enrgy like renewable purchase obligation hasn't been address
2.need of technology for improving energy efficiency so that air quality can be improved hasn't been addressed
3.Challebges wrt growing commitment towards renewable energy along with decreasing cost of renewable energy makes it difficult to continue increase the coal production as envisaged by draft policy
4.Present definition of electrification of village is when 10% of household have the electric connection,  which need to be change to have actual 100% electrification of India

With Indian annual per capita electricity consumption is expected to triple from 1075 kwh in 2015-16 to 2900 kwh in 2040, draft policy is a step in right direction to address such  growing need but it need to be reform wrt present need of renewable enegy,  more emphasis on electric cars then internal combustion engine etc.
